Penelope the Great

October 12, 2016

–Maria M. Ruiz (@chibiloulou)

Strong like the wind
She did not bend
No matter the wound
Time would always mend

She stood up for others
Those with no voice
Those whose rights were taken
Without ever given a choice

She hated injustice
And those who abused
Those with cold hearts
Who just took with amuse

She vowed life wouldn’t change her
It wouldn’t thicken her heart
She would still have compassion
Nothing would tear her apart

And the strength she acquired
Undoubtedly sealed her fate
Now when looking in the mirror
She sees only Penelope the Great

Captain Ava

September 21, 2016

By: Maria M. Ruiz – @chibiloulou

Captain Ava

Up high in the sky
Just like a flare
I never felt freer
Not a worry or care

I flew above buildings
And houses and parks
I flew over oceans
With dozens of sharks

I was finally a pilot
And boy was I proud
I waved to the sun
As I flew through a cloud

“Ava get up!”
Mom yelled from the hall
But I didn’t want to
Not really at all

But got up I did
With a pout on my face
And slowly but surely
I tied my shoelace

“Why so gloomy today?”
Mom asked as I wept
“Cause I had a great dream
And wish I’d overslept.”

“Silly Ava” she said
As she put down her tea
Hugging me tightly
She then said to me

“Dreams do not stop
Just because you’re awake,
In daydreams especially
You want to partake.

For daydreams are visions
And visions are goals,
And for goals you work hard
With your heart and soul.

And one day you’ll see
That your dreams came true,
Because you never gave up
Whatever life threw.”

Charismatic Chloé

October 27, 2015

By: Maria M. Ruiz

Everyone knew Chloé
So generous and kind
Ever poised and proper
And very refined

Always lending a hand
To anyone in need
Not expecting a return
Never knowing greed

She never judged
Nor assumed
And where she went
Friendships bloomed

If you were sad
She’d wipe your tears
And was always there
To squash your fears

And through her mouth
Came only truth
She never lied
Nor abused

So, let’s vow to be warm
And not so snowy
The world would be brighter
If we were like Chloé

It’s Rhyme Time!

October 8, 2015

Hello my loulous,

It has been a while since my last post, but I am back; and back with a new leisure activity you might say. Recently, in my daily interactions, whenever someone has mentioned how they are sad, happy, missing something, etc., I turned to paper and pen (or more like a computer) to attempt to put their feelings down on paper. Which brings me to….wait for it…..POETRY!

Now, let me be the first to say that I am no poet, by any means. However, I do feel a sudden urge to write and express. Whether it be for me or for others, or for just plain old fun! Let us proceed shall we?

I wrote this poem after a WhatsApp conversation with my fiancé, an international recruiter for Florida International University at the time. He was expressing how he was feeling a bit nostalgic after realizing he was on his last recruitment trip for the university (He has switched departments since).

Adieu Admissions                                        Airplane-Drawing

Oh little admissions office
How very busy you were
From walk-ins to fairs
You will always stay in mon coeur

You gave me the world
And I gave you five years
Now it is time for us to part
And I just might shed a tear

Thank you for the opportunities
And the many friendships made
All my winnings and successes
Got me feeling like D. Wade

I will miss you
And I know you will miss me too
But we will always have one love in common
And her name is FIU

I wrote this next poem after a recent conversation with a co-worker. She was melancholy, because she had done a treatment on her hair. Now, her once curly locks were silky straight, and she missed her curls very much.

Straight Out of Curl

Curls upon curls
Curls all over mecurlysue
All those swirls and twirls
Once filled me with joyous glee

But change came a knockin’
And I straightened them out
If only I had known
That their loss would make me pout

For I miss their bounce
And the happiness they made me feel
They were always so upbeat
Always so full of zeal

But alas they are gone
And it is a new, scary change
I still feel like me
Just a little bit strange

Well, there you have it! My silly attempt at poetry. I admit I am having oodles of fun with this, and after all, is that not what self-expression is all about?

Stay tuned for more!

Love always,
